GOT – Episode 1 – the Gathering Storm

Guys-you are back! Sad to say I gave up on American Gods after 2 episodes. So on we go to a show that has both style AND substance!

A great start to the final season. I liked the way the catch up on all the character was short and sweet. All the chess pieces are now on the board so let the game begin.

Jon Snow – archetype “Mr Nice Guy” – would make a terrible king as he would be making all decisions in a moral and emotional context.

Sansa – archetype “The Cold Bitch” – biggest advantage is everyone underestimates her. She is a good leader from a tactical point of view but is she a strategic thinker – the jury is still out.

Cersei – archetype “The Crazy Cold Bitch” – seemed out of place in this episode. What did we learn about her strategy other than she was pissed she had no elephants at her disposal! Also, the whole Greyjoy story is just not interesting anymore and Euron’s “bat shit crazy” act is tiring at this stage.

And so we come to Mother of Dragons – archetype “Realpolitik” – she is the only one at this stage that has what it takes to win the game – she reminds me of a Queen Elizabeth of England type character. She is charming but ruthless and has the drive to get what she wants. In my view none of the other contenders for the throne can match her in ambition. The tragic ending to the series that people in the know are hinting at, is that Jon Snow will be the final casualty in her path to the throne, she will not eliminate him because she hates him but because he is a threat to her ambitions and position. That is the ending I want, as it best reflects who has played the game the best.
