Hello Shat Hosts,

Colin here. Long time listener, first time writing in. I just watched “Her” for the first time a few weeks ago so I am very happy that Gene also found that comparison. The downtown LA backdrop and AI earbuds were eerily similar to those in the movie. Then again, it’s hard to imagine that Spike Jonze’s time on the set of Jackass and direction of Where the Wild Things Are has not been a major influence on Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

In all seriousness, it really is such a smart move to take a more pulled back approach to present the future. To feel believable, audiences don’t want to see the obnoxious and outlandish lifestyles like those of the Capitol citizens in the Hunger Games films. We want to see the ideas of today taken just a few steps further. A big miss by a lot of movies and shows is that they present the future as almost a completely different planet. In reality, what made “Her” and this episode so believable were the similarities between today and 2058, not the differences. We need to remember, we are only 38 years into the future. I just hope the show-runners stay on this path and don’t overreach in this world they’ve created. Thanks all. Keep up the good work.

I could not agree more. I love how grounded in our world so much of it seems. It certainly makes the implications of what happens there more interesting for us as viewers!
