Littlefinger’s Downfall

Have a Theory? Share It Now!

Hey Guys,

I think this episode gave us a subtle hint as to what the downfall of Littlefinger will be. If you go back and watch the scene where Sansa is running Winterfell like a boss, she asks Maester Wolkan if he knows how long the longest winter of the past 100 years was. He responds to her by saying that he doesn’t know but that he will check the records kept by Maester Luwin, and he further explains that Luwin kept excellent records.

Now let’s go back to the first episode of the series. A messenger was sent to Winterfell to deliver a message to Catelyn. The message was sent by her sister Lysa and claimed the Lannisters were involved in the death of her late husband Jon Arryn and that the king is in danger. Catelyn realizing how sensitive the information was burned the letter immediately after reading it. It wasn’t until season four that we found out that the Lannisters were not involved in the murder of Jon Arryn, but that Littlefinger convinced Lysa to poison her husband and then send the letter to Catelyn implicating the Lannisters in this crime.

The show is setting up for this letter to be the cause of Littlefinger’s downfall. Maester Luwin very easily could have kept a record of this letter. If you go back and watch the scene from this past weeks episode Littlefinger gives a look to Maester Wolkan immediately after he mentions the extensive records that Maester Luwin kept. However, it’s not the crime that will be Littlefinger’s undoing but the coverup. He will get caught by Sansa or someone else trying to remove this information but the answers to why won’t be immediately clear. Bran who just arrived at Winterfell knows everything, but he needs context to fully understand what he knows. The combination of Bran knowing everything and Sansa finding out about the coverup will give them the information necessary to expose Littlefinger. Looking forward to your show on Thursday.

Best,
Charlie from Boston
