Lovecraft Country Episode 1

Hello Ashley, Gene, and King Bee,

I really enjoyed the first episode. The opening dream sequence confused me for a moment because it looked like WW I trench warfare and I thought Atticus would have been in WW II according to the set up. Then the aliens attacked and I was geeking out trying to identify all the sc-fi Easter Eggs. The Princess of Mars could actually have been any damsel in distress from the Golden Age of Pulp Fiction, busty and scantily clad.

The eldricht horror part of the show seems to work better than the racist horror in the show. The most glaring moment in my opinion was at the diner. Here are 3 people that live with overt and fatal racism every day. George publishes a book on how to travel safely in the United States for Black travelers. While Atticus thinks staying to eat at the diner is a bad idea, George points out that they’re citizens and Atticus is a military veteran and why shouldn’t they expect to be served. Really?? Okay the diner didn’t have “Whites only” signs, but really?? It felt very out of character at this point in the show and rather forced.

On the other hand, did everyone see that the truck that chased them did not hit the silver Rolls Royce? It hit something a few feet in front of the car and then flipped over it. So ups and downs, all in all a pretty good opening with lots of room to grow.
