Um, Actually…

I love the podcast, I’ve been listening since I binged all 6 seasons of Game of Thrones in three weeks preceding Season 7. By the time I got to Season 7, I desperately needed an accompanying video/podcast, and I looked around for a while until I landed on your show. I’m so glad I found you guys. I’ve taken Shat the Movies on long road trips and followed along with you through Westworld, and Season 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones. You’re the podcast I turned to when I struggled through the ending of a relationship, and you’re the guys I turn to when I needed a little laughter and fun in my life, thanks for creating a space for me to be apart of the conversation.
So, with that being said, um, actually!… In one of the recent podcasts, regarding whether it was snowing or raining ash in King’s Landing in the first half of episode 6, Big D said that it was not likely that it would snow in King’s Landing (though if I remember right, I believe he pretty firmly stated that it couldn’t, or wouldn’t, snow there). I actually really think this could be snow, and I think it’s a nice touch to the end of a series so focused on winter. First, I think it’s hard to say that in a fictional land where summer and winter can both last for years, that it would be impossible for it to snow one day (or for a few weeks) in King’s Landing, and then be sunny and clear a few weeks later. King’s Landing is pretty far south, as Big D stated. I could see the show creators ending the last episode with the capital seeing the last touch of winter before winter recedes back to the North. Now you might say that the Knight King is what brought winter south, and without him, winter is essentially over, or at the very least, not as bad as it would have been without his presence, but I think the natural effects of winter could still be felt momentarily in King’s Landing at the end of the series, and I’m glad that it did. Second, I have no doubt that all the fiery destruction brought on by Drogon caused some falling ash, but I just don’t think ash would be falling for that long (or that much). My father lived close to Mt. St. Helens when it erupted, from what I’ve heard about this event, it rained ash for days; from what I’ve seen in some videos, it looked thick and rained steady, like what we saw in the show. So here is my problem, I find it hard to believe that burning a city to the ground, the way Drogon did, would produce the amount of ash that fell. Can we really liken this to a volcanic eruption (think Vesuvius)? It was likely a day or two between episode 5 and 6, Drogon even has enough time to take a nap and get completely covered by this falling substance. I think it is possible it’s ash, but I think it’s much more likely to be snow (or maybe a bit of both). I’m just saying, I certainly think it’s possible to snow a few days in King’s Landing, only to be sunny and beautiful a few days later. Also, if you’d ever lived in Washington state, you’d know snowing a blanket of snow one day, only to be 80 degrees the next, is not so impossible.
Thanks again, you’ve got a long term listener in me. =)
