Ummm actually, when you get a pawn to the last rank of the chess board, you can promote it to whatever piece you want (excluding a king or pawn), regardless of what pieces have been taken. For instance, even If your queen has not been taken, you can still promote your pawn to a second queen (lucky king am i right?). So, you almost always want to promote your pawn into a queen, unless of course, promoting to a queen stops your opponent from moving any pieces, causing a stalemate (draw), orrr if by promoting to a knight, you put your opponent in a forced checkmate situation (a scenario where the opponent has little to no moves left, that lead to an unpreventable checkmate).
