We All Live In The Past

It is interesting to me that we see Dr. Manhattan, a god who lives in the past, present, and future all at once and if you are like me, you pity him. But, isn’t that what we as humans do? After all, nostalgia became a problem when people only wanted to stay in the past. We wish for the glory days or the days before things were so stressful, we dream of a better future or worse yet worry about what our future will bring, oftentimes more than we live in the present. Dr. Manhattan offered Angela a chance at love, for a time, knowing it would end and she, our story’s hero, took the chance. She chose to live only in the present. So many of these characters, Hood of Justice and Lady Trieu are living and making choices because of what was. Looking Glass fears what will be and because of it destroys what is. Just when I thought I was reaching for this idea, I started to think about how fans treat this show. Will it live up to what was before it, will it be true to the original? Once they hooked us, will this be another Lost, will they go too far and wreck it in the end? All of this thinking very often detracted from people’s ability to enjoy what was right in front of them at the moment, an awesome spectacle of a television show.

Just a thought, maybe I’m seeing connections where I shouldn’t, but I wouldn’t put it past Lindelof to hold a mirror up to his fans.
