Westworld’s Commitment to Excellence

Hey Guys,

……..the topic of the excellent acting inevitably comes up when people talk about Westworld. If you haven’t seen it, check out the documentary “Behind The Planet Of The Apes”

They talk about the struggle to get it right and make sure that it didn’t come off hammy or cheesy.

One way they did this was to hire excellent actors. They could have easily gone the cheap route and put anyone in that make up except they hired the likes of Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter and Maurice Evans.

The idea being that excellent actors would sell their roles and characters and be believable regardless of being in make up the entire movie. Their commitment to the project was inspiring and obviously brilliant considering the strength of the franchise almost 50 years later.

Westworld could have easily been corny and cheesy, there had been, at some point, some version of a reboot movie floating around for years. Arnold Schwarzenegger was even attached to star. “Delores I’m hee-ya” “come geet me I’m hee-ya” “come Geet me”.

None of that happened, thankfully. Instead we have this absolutely spellbinding Westworld. What do they do? Well immediately hire actors the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Jeffery Wright, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, James Marsden and definitely Louis Herthum! You get it. Nothing but top shelf, very competent actors to sell their roles. Gives it such a feeling of prestige, excellent actors who are dead set on giving their best performances. Does anyone dispute that next to Hannibal Lecter this is one of Anthony Hopkins greatest characters? It might even just edge Hannibal out.

Thats why though. This show could have been cheesy AF littered with a bunch of b list talent, but instead, some of the best actors working today in front of the camera and pros at the top of their perspective game behind it.

Westworld is way better than it should have ever possibly been. Its a gift and man am I thankful for it!

While it pains me that the end of season 2 is on the horizon, I’m seriously looking forward to these final episodes. Its gonna be one hell of a ride.

So for the massive amount of money spent and the hundreds of people that make this happen, thank you.
