Hello guys,

Great to be on this journey with you once again with Westworld. I don’t know if you are necessarily a fan of anime but a lot of themes of a benevolent dystopian society with an omniscient AI system this season is taking a lot of cues from an anime called Psycho Pass (Season 1 which I highly highly recommend considering the philosophical questions and conundrums it asks). The basic summary is this:

“In the 22nd century, Japan enforces the Sibyl System, an objective means of determining the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for signs of criminal intent, known as their Psycho-Pass. Inspectors uphold the law by subjugating, often with lethal force, anyone harboring the slightest ill-will; alongside them are Enforcers, jaded Inspectors that have become latent criminals, granted relative freedom in exchange for carrying out the Inspectors’ dirty work”

I won’t spoil it too much but essentially the state of mental health is accredited to how people become criminal, so the Sibyl system has implemented systems such as finding paths/jobs for people to be happy, removal of anything violence even in entertainment to make sure that people don’t get distressed and increase their psycho pass (this causes major issues later on).

However, the messed up part is that even young kids can be deemed latent criminals because they’re measured to have high Psycho Pass and therefore spend their lives locked away or become enforcers despite never committing any crime.

But the most interesting thing about the Sibyl system is that allowed asymptomatic people to reek havoc with no issue despite the police’s best efforts; asymptomatic people in this case were people who were able to maintain low Psycho Pass level but still commit crimes without alerting the Sibyl system. This is because the police being equipped with weapons tied to them system and therefore could measure Psycho Pass had only varying modes. High = killed on site. Medium = incapacitate. Low = not a threat (essentially psychopaths and sociopaths adapted well in this world).

But ultimately the system allowed this aberrations because it could analyse their data (brains) to learn better and therefore keep sustaining itself as the AUTHORITY. Maybe that’s the case with Dolores and Rehoboam is allowing this disturbance because it can use Dolores and the chaos she’ll cause to further learn and then ultimately sustain itself even longer as the AI. Maybe that’s why it allows criminality to happen because a degree of crime is essential in sustaining a pacified society.

Anyway thanks,
