Westworld Musings

Hi all,

So I wanted to introduce a little thought about William and the “weapon” he showed Delores, but first, I have to say that first I am getting a little frustrated with this season of Westworld. I find that the pacing this year has been so uneven. While I have enjoyed episodes, it’s a bit erratic in terms of one being so slow paced, the next being full of action (see Shogun world), and then the next being super cerebral, and finally this week being full of straight forward answers. It is shot beautifully and acted beautifully, but the overall delivery of the story has been uneven and unhinged at times. Let’s be honest, the focus on the romantic (whether it be Teddy and Delores or Maeve and Hector) weighs the show down. Romance and Westworld just don’t work. Neither does sentiment and Westworld, but we still have the sappy story lines of Delores and her Dad or Maeve and her daughter or Akane in Shogun world. I just think that they will continue to lose viewers not because of the complexity of the story lines but because those complex story lines are so full of bloat at times that it makes you forget how awesome other aspects of the series truly are.

That being said, I wanted to just respond to something Kerri and Gene said on the Instacast (which was a depressingly short one at only 18 minutes.). The two of them talked about potential uses of the weapon Delores is seeking in the valley beyond. I think Kerri is right to turn the conversation toward the potential “souls” that are there or the data that is there that Delores can destroy. Surely this would be a great weapon, but I had one other thought. What if the weapon is more than that. We know now that Delos was collecting all of this information about its guests and the hosts were just the control. The data collected from the humans is being used to replicate human behavior, replicate their every move and every thought. Therefore, what if at the valley beyond there is the means to predict human behavior before it begins. We know that Ford has accomplished this. He has successfully predicted when and where the Man in Black will go. Why couldn’t the hosts harness such power, such potential. In their hands, that would be the ultimate weapon because like Ford says, the human brain is the last piece of analog technology in a digital world. The hosts are all digital. They have the ability to run simulations and consider options that the human brain cannot. They can out think us, and if given the power to predict ahead of time what we’d do, we as a race would have no shot. The last thing I’ll say on this is that I went and re-watched the scene between Delores and Hale. Hale for the first time in the series shows true emotion when she realizes Delores knows about the valley beyond. You can see the tears and the fear. I refuse to believe that amount of emotion is just because of some uploaded people there. Instead, it has to be something more, something more sinister for us if the hosts receive it. For me, that means accessing a true weapon of advantage over the humans has to be there.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.
