Westworld S3E2 – Serac vs. Ford

Hi All,

I watch a lot of TV. A lot, a lot. With most of the series I watch, it’s the continued development of the core characters that keeps me invested. Two episodes into Season 3 and surprisingly it’s the complete opposite for me with Westworld. I’m finding myself most interested in our new characters and what they’ll add to or complicate about the themes that the show is exploring.

After watching “The Winter Line” a couple of times, I’m really curious about Serac and what he’ll bring to the table. How much of his pitch to Maeve was self-serving manipulation? Does his part in creating Rehoboam spring from any real interest in building a better future or is it really just about amassing power?

I’m curious if Serac will wield his influence like Ford, who was manipulative but highly self-aware, or like Delos, who was more direct and lacking introspection. Serac’s assertion that it will be Rehoboam rather than himself that authors the future reminds me a bit of Ford’s approach to helping the conscious Hosts get out into the real world and change it.

One major difference here is that the purpose of Rehoboam seems center on imposing a more rigid structure for humanity to fall in line with, whereas Ford’s plan to free the Hosts introduces a chaotic element that could destroy humanity. That’s got me thinking: how much did Ford know about Serac and Rehoboam? Was one of his unstated goals to thwart the Rehoboam system?

Looking forward to your thoughts on E2!
