Why Ford Created One Last Game For Mib (Endgame)

Hi guys,

thank you so much for the great podcast. During the hiatus, I almost forgot how much I enjoyed the combination of watching Westworld and listening to your reviews. And kudos for the mix of formats “” really a perfect way to get through to the next episode.

The idea I’ll propose came from big plot point that puzzled me: Why would Ford not only have Sizemore script the Delos board massacre, but let William survive and script a “game” for him to play? My only explanation is that Ford anticipated William’s actions. But why would Ford need William to go to the “weapon” /”door” in the valley beyond? And why does William want to get there?

My idea: Assume that Ford’s objective has always been to create an AI version of himself and live “forever” (see his quote “Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin never died. They simply became music.” ). Delos efforts to extract the IP from the park and maybe shut it down are threatening this plan. So, Ford’s AI needs to leave the park “” not just as a vulnerable host, but as a powerful free AI on Westworld’s version of the internet. This could be the reason why Ford killed the Delos board and now wants William to go to the “weapon” . If the “weapon” is a tool to predict behavior, it should have some connection to the Westworld internet (explaining why it is also called the “door”). It seems plausible that William as the creator of the “weapon” would need to authorize some step needed for Ford’s escape.

But why would William want to play along? It appears that Westworld’s behavior prediction tool has already caused turmoil in the world (see Logan’s quote “the whole species starts to burn [“] they lit the match.” ). William as the creator seems to be hated or even prosecuted for this and wants to destroy the tool to redeem himself (see his quotes: “I have received my judgement all the same. [“] I want to fight my way back and appeal the verdict. Then I’m gonna burn this whole f*ing thing to the ground” ). So he goes to the “weapon” to destroy it, but in the course of doing so, he might inadvertently create circumstances for Ford’s AI to escape.

This would give us an interesting constellation akin to the Faustian bargain at the end of Lost: William wants to save humanity by destroying Westworld, Bernard (like Arnold) presumably sees the hosts morally superior to humanity, so he might want them to rule, and Ford cares only for himself and threatens both. (Ford’s annoyance with Bernard’s sentimental attachment to Dolores in this episode is one more hint that this apparent sympathy for the hosts is just superficial.)
