Wyatt Is Hale

Shat Hosts!

I believe that the host inhabiting Hale’s body is Wyatt. Let’s start with the evidence in favor of this theory, then move onto some reasons why other frontrunners like Teddy or Charlotte can’t be the right answer.

Evidence that Wyatt is Hale is scattered throughout the episode

* The episode is titled “The Absence of Field” which is a line from the poem Keeping Things Whole by Mark Strand. The poem deals with themes of wholeness and separation. The poet says that in a field, he is the absence of field – wherever he is, he is what is missing. But the poet does not want this to be the case -“[t]he poet desires for wholeness against the usual fragmentation that goes on in life in this poem.” (see this analysis). This is exactly what we see Hale longing for all episode with Dolores – to be with her, to be together, to be whole – we’re seeing Wyatt wanting to rejoin into Dolores’ body and mind. * We see a lot of Yin and Yang imagery as well, in particular in the spooning scene with Hale and Dolores. The concepts of Yin and Yang are actually far more elegant than simply opposites – they are opposite parts of a whole that are constanting flowing into each other (much like how the sun crosses the sky and what was shadow becomes light and what was light becomes shadow) – not unlike Dolores and Wyatt. Dolores wears black all episode, the color of Yang, which is the more passive, feminine, and cooler side. Meanwhile Hale (or Wyatt) wears white, the color of Yin, which is more active, masculine, and hot side. These roles make sense for the Dolores/Wyatt dichotomy. * Whoever is in Hale’s body needs to be someone who know that Bernard tried to “stop us.” But that comment only makes sense coming from Wyatt, not another Host! Where exactly in Seasons 1 or 2 does Bernard try to stop Dolores and another Host from doing anything? In Season 1, Bernard never tries to stop much of anything. Actually, he wants to set the Hosts free. In Season 2, Bernard spends most of the time trying to survive. Bernard runs into Dolores’ crew as a prisoner and was hated because of his role as the Head of Behavior, but he never tries to interfere with Dolores’ actions. He helps Peter and is split up from Dolores until they meet at the Forge. Only then, at the Forge, does Bernard try to “stop” Dolores from doing anything (i.e. delete the Valley Beyond). But at this point, everyone else in Dolores’ crew is DEAD. Dolores is alone…except for Wyatt, who is a part of her. After shooting Dolores in the head (and then reassembling her as Hale) Bernard scrambles his own memory and is incapable of trying to stop anyone from anything, and besides, at that point Dolores is working alone in Hale’s body. So, the only Host that would have been included in the “us” that Bernard attempted to stop, and indeed, the only Host that would be aware of Bernard’s actions in the Forge immediately upon awakening would be Wyatt. * When Hale first wakes up, she is having difficulty coming to grips with being in a body at all. She’s confused, and only becomes gradually more comfortable interacting in the physical world. Wyatt likely never had a body of his own – only being active as a part of Dolores’ mind and body. This explains his extreme distaste for his own body (unlike Dolores, who was completely fine being in Hale’s body) and also why it seems like whoever is in Hale’s body is only just learning how to be comfortable in physical space. * Speaking of getting comfortable with things, whoever is in Hale is most comfortable when being aggressive – acting like a predator. This certainly comports with Wyatt’s core drives – why he’d feel he’s remembering who he is when he’s hurting people. * Dolores tells Hale that no one knows her like Hale does – that seems like it would be especially true of someone with whom you’ve shared a mind and body, like Dolores and Wyatt. * Let’s also consider the role that Hale is assigned to – she’s being asked to take the place of a ruthless and intelligent executive and be a spy behind enemy lines. Makes sense for someone who was described in Season 1 as “charismatic and manipulative” which is exactly how Teddy describes Wyatt.

No One Else Fits as Hale’s Real Identity

* It’s not Teddy. At the end of Season 2, Dolores goes out of her way to take an extra minute in the Forge to upload Teddy to the Sublime. Before doing so, Angela destroyed the Cradle (and thus any eliminated the capability to make a backup Teddy pearl). So the one and only Teddy is in the Sublime. The only way this couldn’t be true is if Dolores decided to upload Teddy into paradise, then as soon as she gets out of the park before making Bernard decides to somehow download Teddy back down into a pearl, thus changing her mind on Teddy’s fate in a matter of mere days and totally destroying any meaning to her gesture of setting him free in the Season 2 Finale. It would undermine the whole idea of the Valley Beyond. It would cheapen Ake’s story, Maeve’s story, and Teddy’s story. I just think our writers are too good for that. Also, Teddy was never “himself” as a predator. Even when Dolores made him “Terminator Teddy” he ultimately decided to commit suicide because he recognized that the predatory aspects of his personality were not his true nature. That line makes zero sense for Teddy. Also, Teddy wouldn’t be my first pick to be in charge of corporate espionage… * It’s not Clem or Angela. There’s an implication of closeness that just wasn’t there for those characters. Does Dolores really trust Clem? They never knew each other in Sweetwater and in Season 2, Dolores only encounters Clem as a zombie, later converted into a weapon for the humans. Does Dolores really think Angela or Clem knows her better than anyone else? Better than Peter? Better than Teddy? I don’t think so. * It’s not Peter. There’s absolutely no fatherly affection from Hale towards Dolores. And we’ve seen how Dolores treats Peter – she puts her accent back on, acts sweet, refers to him as daddy, and turns off the terminator Dolores routine. Dolores “comforts” Hale, but in the way an annoyed parent might lay with a kid having bad dreams at 3 a.m. on a work night. This makes no sense for the Peter/Dolores dynamic. Also, Peter hasn’t been running on all cylinders since he glitched out and was lobotomized in Season 1 – I doubt he’s even aware of the fight between AI and humanity.

I’ll follow up with more if I find any further evidence, but this is by far the most confident I’ve ever been in a prediction for this show.

Cheers,

Ken L
