Westworld as the Garden of Eden?

Hi guys,

Congrats on the big success! You guys must be chuffed. (VERY PLEASED) Well deserved!

My brain is about to explode this week and I have a lot of stuff, so you may not want to read this email on the podcast. Hopefully, there’s some stuff of use to you in your own research.

Episode 4 was a pivot episode. It didn’t really move the plot forward, but it explained a few things and pushed my curiosity on many others. The most important thing being, I still believe in W=MIB.

So I will start with observations and then move on to theories.

In Lawrence’s village:

  • when the marshall comes to get here, the girl suddenly isn’t there anymore. At that point, I believe she is remembering the first time she came to that town (possibly the time with William)… again triggered by the little girl telling her to remember.
  • Lawrence’s daughter appears in her visions wearing at least 2 different outfits. We know that a character is always dressed the same, so if she was dressed differently, then she must have been playing a different character.
  • Please take a look at these two shots. There is a table is the left when she is with Lawrence’s daughter, but not when the Marshall appears. In the subsequent shots, it cannot be seen anywhere behind the Marshall.
  • In the flashback, we see dolores over a grave… looking closely the name on the cross seems to be Dolores (and is that the MIB next to her? don’t think so, but still)

Westworld as The Garden of Eden Westworld as The Garden of Eden

I’m still believing the dual timelines and that William=MIB. But I am a silly girl, and the heart wants what it wants.

On the MIB front,

  • He knows Arnold? So remember back after Episode 2, when I said that perhaps Logan was Ford’s Son and William was marrying his daughter…. now I think Logan might have been Arnold’s son. Something tragic most certainly happens to William’s fiance at some point. Could this be the same personal tragedy that marked Arnold?
  • Nifty trick with the match alerting control room to trigger the pyrotechnics.
  • Armistice as the entrance to the maze could represent the maze as a means to end poverty/war or just the general chaos of the outside world

On Dr. Robert Ford and Theresa,

  • I loved this scene. I think it’s only purpose was to show Theresa that he is powerful beyond what she imagined, both in his control over the hosts and his control over her. It was pure intimidation.
  • He made a point of saying that his new narrative was not retrospective, and that he is not sentimental (as the bulldozers come plowing through)
  • This was Theresa’s memory, just another thing he created, and he can demolish it any time.

I’m completely stumped on Orion. I really don’t know the significance of this except to think that the stars behave strangely in that world in comparison to time. The hosts are going through the same days again and again, but the stars must keep changing position. Fours stars in the belt threw me though.

I loved that Robert Ford is that man who shot Jesse James. There is also the Wyatt/Flood connection. Then I found this:

Best known for catching wolves alive with his bare hands, John R. Abernathy (1876″1941) was born to Scottish ancestors in Texas. Raised in the burgeoning railroad town of Sweetwater, Abernathy considered himself a true son of the Wild West. In his amazing life he worked as a U.S. marshal, sheriff, Secret Service agent, and wildcat oil driller. But it was the accidental discovery of a bold means of catching wolves alive that made Abernathy famous and drew the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt. By forcing his hand deep enough into a wolf’s mouth, he could stun the creature long enough to capture it, a service for which he was paid fifty dollars by eager ranchers.

I will leave you with a wonderful analogy, courtesy of my lovely husband (who is now enjoying his second glass of Koolaid).

He suggests that Westworld is the Garden of Eden. Dr. Ford is the great creator, Dolores is Eve, and Teddy is Adam. Bernie is the poor schmuck who gets duped into offering Eve the apple and taking the blame for it for the rest of eternity.

Can’t wait to hear tomorrow’s podcast. – xx Jez
