The Book, And What It Means

I’m really drained but couldn’t fall asleep, so I decided to do a bit of digging to find out whatever I could regarding Episode 6. This may be a long one (and I will copy/paste a portion of the description of the book to help speed things along).

When we see young William retreat to his room, he picks up a book and begins to read it. This is Westworld, where a hat is never just a hat, and a book is never just a book. That would be too trivial. The Title of the book is Sir Rowan and the Lady of Sulon. There is no novel with that exact title (because that would be too fucking easy, and I don’t need sleep anyway, right?!?). HOWEVER, I found the reference they were meaning to portray for us. READ ALL THE WAY TO THE END FOR A HUGE EASTER EGG THAT SEALS IT UP TIGHT!!

There are many Sir Rowan’s, both historical and fictional, throughout history. The closest match to the name Rowan (and a damn good metaphor) derives from Chuck Black’s young adult fantasy novel Sir Rowan and the Camerian Conquest. The similarities are uncanny. This is the 6th and final book of the ” Knights of Arrethtrae” series, which are each written as a Christian allegory. Sir Rowan’s installment happens to be pertaining to the book of Revelation. I will do my best to briefly summarize the plot:

Sir Rowan begins the story as an orphaned stable boy, when Sir Aldwyn (the Prince’s Knight) notices the lad’s talents with a sword. Rowan finds himself apprenticed to the knight, and in time grows into a great and mighty warrior himself. He becomes Sir Rowan, Champion of Laos. He remains attentive to his physical stature and swordsmanship, but gradually loses interest in the teachings of the Prince (which are noble and virtuous), and instead proceeds to seek pride and glory from tournaments.

When on one of his many journeys, Sir Rowan encounters a mysterious knight, who reveals to him a startling revelation. The knight beseeches Sir Rowan to undertake a mission of dire importance, but instead his request is foolishly cast aside. As Sir Rowan continues on with his prideful ways, his world is suddenly filled with disaster. Everything of value is taken from him and he is left for dead by the people he trusted. He is captured and beaten, and just as death seems eminent, he has a miraculous vision of the Prince, and a strange maiden dedicated to the King helps keep him alive. He vows to live the rest of his life dedicated to the values he abandoned. As he heals, his life has new meaning in service to his King.

All is not well, however, as his beloved land has fallen victim to the tyranny of an evil oppressor. His countrymen desperately need his help waging war to take back their country, but another individual, the mysterious Sir Lijah insists that Sir Rowan’s destiny lies elsewhere-far from his homeland, in an ancient city, and for a cause he knows nothing about. Sir Rowan grapples with the choice of liberating his land as he believes the Prince wishes, or following the mysterious knight elsewhere, while that same knight also claims he serves the very same Prince! I will not spoil any more of the plot of Westworld by narrating this book’s ending, but suffice to say the themes of Sir Rowan’s adventures coincide significantly with William and his path to redemption. All this is way too much of a coincidence to just “fall into place” like this.

Now for the kicker…..The title of the novel was amended from “Sir Rowan and the Camerian Conquest” to “Sir Rowan and the Lady of Sulon”. As it turns out, “Sulon” translates to “West” in Sundanese, making it “Lady of the West”
