Theory About Westworld
Just listened to the show for the first time and wanted to share a theory.
In a nut shell, Arnold’s research in consciousness leads him to discover a way to “upload” his own consciousness into Westworld’s programming before he dies or is murdered in the real world. This gives him the ability to communicate with the hosts (voices in the head). The human mind is made of the conscious (Westworld), the unconscious (The real world), and the subconscious. Arnold’s goal is to become the subconscious mind for all of the hosts in Westworld because when he does, all 3 components of the human mind will be in place and his goal of creating a sentient being will be accomplished. We see this for the first time in Dolores. When asked by Bernard why she asked him about his son, she replies “I don’t know.” She had her first real, non-scripted, independent thought and it scared her. She even looked slightly frightened when replying that she didn’t know.
As a “Ghost in the Machine” Arnold can easily remove the weapons provision, and theoretically any provision, from any host at any time as he did when he told Dolores to kill the scoundrel about to rape her.
One other thought. Dr. Ford and Arnold definitely didn’t end things on good terms. The only time we’ve seen Dr. Ford show any emotion was when he was scolding the technician for covering the host. The very thought of a host having non-programmed human emotions (Arnold’s main goal) seems to not only anger Ford but send him into a rage.
Have a great day!
Christian

Bingo! And let’s look behind that rage, Christian, and examine why Dr. Ford is so adamant about triple-underlining the border between human and host. I think it’s an act of kindness and a precaution against chaos. He doesn’t want the hosts to approach consciousness, because that would mean incredible pain and anger for them. I don’t think Ford is a sadist; he’s just a man utterly determined not to make the mistakes Arnold did.
As for Arnold being the “Ghost In The Machine,” I wonder if that’s what the undefined peak of the pyramid involves. Arnold doesn’t feel like he’s out of the picture forever, and there’s a strong possibility the transfer of his consciousness required the loss of his life.
