Westworld Episode 5 Review: “Genre”
Westworld Episode 5 Review: “Genre”
Ready to get weird? Let’s get weird. Ashley dissects Caleb and Serac. Big D gives lessons on hallucinogens and shoulder-fired missiles, and Gene takes you on a magical musical journey through Westworld Season 3, Episode 5: “Genre.”
The Shat Crew also digs into Rehoboam weaponizing hope, why the car-chase haters are wrong, new T-shirt ideas, and how Giggles and Ash just happened to show up at the right time. RICO most definitely suave.

Westworld Episode 5 Summary:
Dolores and Caleb escape with Liam with help from Ash and Giggles, and convince him to give his private key so they can escape from Serac’s men, which also allows Martin and Bernard to access Rehoboam. Martin sends Dolores files on Serac from Rehoboam before sending every individual on the planet the data and plans Rehoboam has on them, and the world descends into chaos. Ashley arrives to free Bernard, and Martin instructs them to find Serac’s facility where he kept high-risk individuals, including Serac’s brother, that would have disrupted the system. Martin then sacrifices himself and kills several of Serac’s agents in an explosion. When Dolores reports Liam is no longer necessary, Ash kills him for what she had discovered, but reveals there is more to Caleb than he knows.

Just want to get this on the record before the episode tonight: I think we’ll see Genre (the drug) again this season. It’s Chekhov’s Drug and we haven’t seen the final act yet. The episode “Genre” was a narrative tool to familiarize us with the rules and sensations of this drug. I have seen the complaints that it seemed like a tangent or gimmick to spend so much time on this kinda lame drug in the context of episode 5. But if I’m correct, we’ll see Genre again sometime in the remaining episodes, as a critical plot detail, and we’ll understand what’s happening because we already went on this weird trip with Caleb. It’s a set up for a callback.
I think you are right that we will either see the drug or one like it.
Hi. My question is about the Delori.
Is Alpha Dolores really the original?
The original Dolores pearl left the island inside Hale.
So how are they explaining that the new Dolores (Evan) that has a copied pearl is now the Alpha/Prime and Charlores who had the original pearl is now subservient? Obviously we need Evan Rachel Wood in that role, but how are they explaining it away? You’d think Charlores wouldn’t be complaining about who she is if she set the whole thing up.
Unless she had one of the other copies switch pearls between the new Dolores (Evan) and Charlores, or set the programming so Charlores would become lesser and new Dolores would become greater.
What do you think?
I am confused about the timing of the Dolori, as well. Which is the most recent??
oops. sorry for posting twice. 😉
No problem 🙂
Just a thought. I think some assume Serac is after guest data. But, what if it isn’t the guest data Serac needs. What if, as you mentioned, he has run simulations? Perhaps he sees that he will eventually lose control of Rehoboam. Maybe he needs the host data to work on scenarios to avoid this future. We have a few hosts who seem to have developed consciousness. Two are loose in the world and one is in a simulation. I think he is looking for what the difference is between the aware host and the rest. He needs the info on the ones sent the Valley Beyond to discern the differences and make changes before he loses control.
Also, at this point, I am pretty sure Caleb has been “re-educated” by Serac. Maybe he is a test case sent out to see if it can be done because Serac wants his brother to be with him…….who knows, maybe he knows he needs him to avoid losing control as well.
I think we are not yet done with Serac’s brother. We will be seeing him again.
Just an idea here, Some have assumed that Serac was after guest data and that is why he needed the coordinates for the Valley Beyond. What if it isn’t the guest data Serac needs. I think ride of the valkyries is more connecting it to kurtZ. Delores AND Syrac both are following Kurt’s methods. If we throw away morality we could save the world quickly or in kurtz case the Vietnam war. Morality is what holds us back from our salvation..but is also our salvation.
