Westworld S2 E6 Maeve Question/Photography Note
Enjoy the pod…
One thing that really confused me in the last ep was Maeve’s determination of who gets to choose their own path. Maeve tells Shogun Maeve she won’t interfere w/ the fight because Shogun Hector needs to choose his own path but she does this seconds after forcing two Shogun World warriors to off themselves. Do you think we are supposed to believe Shogun Hector’s call for the duel is the thing that triggers this new belief in Maeve or are we supposed to be aware of some other determining factor of who gets their own path in Maeve’s world? OR was that somewhat red armor borrowed from the red shirts in Star Trek and we’re just reading too much into this?
Also, I work in film production and wanted to point out one really great detail in the show that was likely a decision by the dp or director. We see the “flashbacks” or scenes in the cradle are in a different aspect ratio but I’m pretty sure they also chose to film them on different lenses. It looks like they are using some wiley anamorphics that are really fast (open really wide). This creates a different sort of texture in the background and really blurs out/softens the image, particularly at the edges of the frame. They also seem to use a lot more contrast in those sequences which traditionally makes it feel more “cinematic” or in this case (to me) simulated. This creates a contrast to the spherical lenses that are more stopped down for the rest of the timelines or “realities”.
