What Is a Crackpot Theory?

Have a Theory? Share It Now!

After the first eight episodes of “Westworld” there are some unanswered questions:

  • Why did Ford create the Wyatt story?
  • Why are Wyatt’s men immune to bullets?
  • What did Arnold do?
  • What is the maze?
  • Why is Dolores retracing her steps?
  • Why was the church and town buried?
  • Why is Ford digging a canyon?
  • Is William the Man in Black?
  • Why is the Man in Black in a hurry?

A crackpot theory is a partial theory, which answers only some of the questions. It’s akin to shipping in fan fiction. It is incomplete, unbalanced, distorted. It imposes a worldview on the story. It says more about the theorist than the world.

A correct theory answers all the questions. It’s complete, balanced, objective. It’s free of a world view. It has the “ring of truth.”

In fiction, the writers’ intention forms a “Meinongian truth“. If the writers are careful, it should be possible to discover it, and it will answer all the above questions. – Chris C.
