Plot Summary:
In the 1987 romantic drama Some Kind of Wonderful, directed by Howard Deutch and written by John Hughes, Eric Stoltz stars as Keith Nelson, a sensitive high school artist from a working-class background with big dreams but little direction. Keith has a longtime crush on Amanda Jones, played by Lea Thompson, the popular and glamorous girl who seems out of reach. When Keith musters the courage to ask Amanda out, she surprises everyone by saying yes, despite the disapproval of her wealthy and controlling ex-boyfriend, Hardy Jenns (Craig Sheffer).
Meanwhile, Keith’s best friend, Watts, played by Mary Stuart Masterson, secretly harbors feelings for him. A tomboy with a sharp wit and a punk-rock attitude, Watts struggles with jealousy and heartbreak as she watches Keith pursue Amanda, knowing her feelings for him may never be reciprocated.
As Keith prepares for his big date with Amanda, he pours his heart into creating a special evening, even risking his college savings to impress her. Along the way, he learns that Amanda’s life isn’t as perfect as it seems and that she faces her own struggles with self-worth and societal expectations. At the same time, Watts’s loyalty and quiet sacrifices force Keith to reevaluate what he truly values in love and friendship.
Some Kind of Wonderful is a heartfelt exploration of love, class differences, and self-discovery. Featuring relatable characters, sharp dialogue, and a memorable soundtrack, the film delivers the emotional depth and charm that define John Hughes’s work.
