Star Wars: Episode VI Return of The Jedi (1983)

This week on Shat The Movies, Gene and Big D close out the original Star Wars trilogy with a deep dive into Return of the Jedi (1983). Fueled by nostalgia, Minute Maid and vodka cocktails, and the crushing realization that not all endings stick the landing, the hosts explore the Ewok invasion, Jabba’s deadly circus act, Boba Fett’s humiliating demise, and the absurdity of Imperial helmet design.
From Luke’s questionable Force skills to the Empire’s laughable “elite troops,” nothing escapes the Shat boys’ critical eye. Along the way, they celebrate Carrie Fisher’s iconic (if problematic) gold bikini moment, mourn for Ewoks lost in battle, and dream up a darker, deadlier version of Endor warfare. Was this the fitting finale Star Wars deserved—or an early warning of Lucas’ merchandising empire run amok? Tune in to find out!
Plot Summary
In the 1983 sci-fi adventure Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, directed by Richard Marquand and written by George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan, the original trilogy comes to an epic conclusion. Mark Hamill returns as Luke Skywalker, now a full-fledged Jedi, who must confront the dark side and his destiny as he seeks to redeem his father, Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones), and help the Rebel Alliance defeat the Galactic Empire once and for all.
The film opens with a daring mission to rescue Han Solo (Harrison Ford) from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt, a grotesque crime lord on Tatooine. With Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO by his side, Luke showcases his growth in power and confidence. After escaping Jabba’s palace, the heroes regroup with the Rebel Alliance for a final strike on the Empire’s new, more powerful Death Star, now under construction in orbit around the forest moon of Endor.
While Han, Leia, and the Rebels lead a ground assault with help from the Ewoks—small but fierce native creatures—Luke confronts Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) in a final attempt to save his father from the dark side. The emotional showdown between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor provides one of the saga’s most powerful moments, blending action, emotion, and moral complexity.
Return of the Jedi balances thrilling space battles, rich character arcs, and a satisfying conclusion to the original trilogy. Join our podcast review as we revisit this climactic chapter, breaking down its memorable scenes, emotional stakes, and whether its legacy still holds strong in the modern Star Wars era.
