The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)

The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! Quote: “And the rockets red glare….buncha bombs in the air…came proof to the night that we still had a flag.” – Frank Drebin

With a joke every 10 seconds, “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” is considered by many the Gold Standard when it comes to ’80s comedies. The gags are nonstop and forever burned into our brains, but is this 30-year-old movie based on a single-season TV show still funny?

That depends on whether you like jokes about loud urination, tigers mauling baseball players, ballistic missiles driving into fireworks shops, and full-body condoms. We do.

Other topics in this episode of Shat The Movies include the carefree vibe of the ’80s, anti-montage parody montages, Ricardo Montelban’s cool, Priscilla Presley’s performance, what it means to let a joke breathe, and O.J. Simpson: hot or not?”

Plot Summary: “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen), a rather clueless police detective, tries to foil a plot to turn innocent people into assassins through mind control. After his partner, Norberg (O.J. Simpson), is shot, Frank sets out to find the culprit, leading him to business tycoon Vincent Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban). However, Frank has no evidence until he meets Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley), Ludwig’s assistant. She knows nothing about Ludwig’s devious plans, but falls for Frank and agrees to help him.
