Ravenous (1999)

Ravenous Quote: “Eat to live. Don’t live to eat.” – Col. Ives

Just as fans feared (or cheered) Shat The Movies slipping into a pattern of covering ’90s blockbuster films, listener Ben in Japan commissioned “Ravenous” to close out the 2021 Shat calendar.

This cannibal Western horror comedy set during the Mexican-American War is about as quirky as cinema gets: a soundtrack by Damon Albarn of Blur, a cartoonish mass murderer, gross-out humor mixed with slapstick giggles. But a killer cast including Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, David Arquette, Jeffrey Jones, Jeremy Davies, and Neal McDonough keeps “Ravenous” oddly accessible and strangely fun.

In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses the sounds of bagels and blowjobs, gross goatees, flashbacks that lack mystery, the danger of knives, the incredible opportunity of being a wendigo in the Old West, and whether “Ravenous” is actually an allegory for repressed homosexuality.

Plot Summary: “Ravenous” Upon receiving reports of missing persons at Fort Spencer, a remote Army outpost on the Western frontier, Capt. John Boyd (Guy Pearce) investigates. After arriving at his new post, Boyd and his regiment aid a wounded frontiersman, F.W. Colghoun (Robert Carlyle), who recounts a horrifying tale of a wagon train murdered by its supposed guide — a vicious U.S. Army colonel gone rogue. Fearing the worst, the regiment heads out into the wilderness to verify Colghoun’s gruesome claims.
